Alice in Wonderland

I recently went to go see Alice in Wonderland in IMAX 3D.  I was skeptical, as I normally am with Tim Burton / Johnny Depp movies.  I generally think they are over-stylized and self-indulgent.  However, I must say I was pleasantly surprised.  There were many things I did not like about the movie (like most of the acting), and some things I thought were just so-so (like the 3D effects and the soundtrack).  But in the end, Johnny Depp made the movie enjoyable.  I’ve got to give him his due: the guy can really act.  The Mad Hatter was the highlight of the movie for me (that, and the voice of the Jabberwocky – Christopher Lee).  There’s also a new Avril Lavigne song at the end (“Alice”) which is very cool.

I went to this movie with my two kids and my youngest niece.  They really enjoyed it.  In fact, my son and I had a round of Lego Wars: Alice in Wonderland Edition when we got home.  He won, as he always does.  Of course, he did have the Vorpal Sword on his side.

Recommendation: Go see the movie in the theater if you have the time, but don’t feel pressured to see it in the IMAX or even in 3D.  It is clean enough to buy when it comes out on DVD, and I can see it eventually making it into my collection.
